A small town between the bay and the ocean

Bay Head is one of the smallest towns on the Jersey Shore. It covers 0.71 square miles and had 930 residents in the 2020 census. The borough sits at the northern end of the Barnegat Peninsula, the narrow strip of land between Barnegat Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, and borders Point Pleasant, Point Pleasant Beach, Mantoloking and Brick Township. Its elevation is only about three feet above sea level.

Historic homes and established gardens

In 2005 the Bay Head Historic District was added to the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places. The district includes more than 550 contributing structures, over half of the buildings in town, built in the Shingle, Stick and Queen Anne styles. Homes like these usually come with mature trees, foundation plantings and hedges that have been in place for years. They look their best when that planting is pruned and kept in proportion to the house rather than left to grow over windows and porches. Older hedges and shrubs also respond best to steady pruning over several seasons, since one heavy cut can leave them bare for a year.

Salt, wind and sand

With the ocean on one side and the bay on the other, Bay Head yards deal with salt spray, steady wind and sandy soil. A stone seawall built in 1882 and later buried under the dunes has been credited by researchers with reducing damage here during Hurricane Sandy. Even so, a low elevation means storms and very high tides can still reach lawns and beds. Regular visits through the season make it easier to catch storm damage, clear debris and keep plantings healthy.
